Mathematics teaches us how to make sense of the world around us through developing a child’s ability to calculate, reason and to solve problems.  It enables children to understand and appreciate relationships and pattern-spot in both number and space in their everyday lives. It enables them to estimate and assume, generalise, prove and disprove, argue with themselves, monitor their own thinking and reflect. Through their growing skills, knowledge and understanding, children learn to become fluent mathematicians and apply this in every part of their life.  

What is our vision for Mathematics?

Our vision is to ensure that children have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Mathematical concepts and develop a love of Maths. Our aim is that all children have the opportunity to have a sound understanding of Mathematics and become life-long mathematicians.

The aims of Mathematics at Timu Academy Trust are

  • Pupils understand and remember the mathematical knowledge, concepts and procedures appropriate for their starting points. This will ensure that pupils are ready for the next stage, whether that is the next lesson, unit of work, year or key stage, including post-16 mathematics
  • Our curriculum plans carefully sequence knowledge, concepts and procedures to build mathematical knowledge and skills systematically and, over time, the curriculum draws connections across different ways of looking at mathematical idea
  • Our curriculum identifies opportunities when mathematical reasoning and solving problems will allow pupils to make useful connections between mathematical ideas and anticipate practical problems they are likely to encounter in adult life
  • Children have the opportunity to rapidly and accurately recall number facts through revisiting mathematical concepts
  • Children gain enjoyment through a growing self-confidence in their mathematical abilities

Mastery

Timu Academy Trust have adopted the Mastery approach to teaching Mathematics. Learning about Maths through Mastery allows children to reason, problem solve and discuss methods that they use. The teaching of the fundamental mathematical concepts, i.e. addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions, is slowed down and it gives children the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of those concepts. It ensures that children have a secure understanding of key skills and that the curriculum does not move onto a new skill until the children are ready. It allows children to ask questions, see key concepts shown in various representations and choose methods that they want to use to help them solve problems.  Mastery also helps children to see that there is often more than one way to get to an answer and it allows the children to explore these different ways.

In line with our new way of delivering the mastery curriculum, we have altered our calculation approaches so that it follows the concrete, pictorial, abstract (CPA) way.

How can you help your child with Maths?

Start by looking at our Teaching Calculation methods so that you can see the methods your child will be learning in their year group as well as the methods they will have already been exposed to in earlier years.

Try to make Maths as much fun as possible – games, puzzles and jigsaws are a great way to make Maths fun. It is also important to show your child how and where Maths is used in everyday life and to involve them in this.  

Some ways you can help your child to enjoy Maths are:

  • Point out different shapes to be found around their local environment. Can they talk about the properties of them, i.e. the number of sides/edges, corners/vertices and angles?
  • Take your child shopping and talk about the quantities of anything you buy. Talk about any offers you may see, such as ‘Buy One, Get One Free’ and how this affects the price of products. Can your child find different units of measure on items such as £, p, kg, g, ml, l and so on?
  • Let your child handle money and work out how much things cost and what change they may get
  • Find numbers in their local environment. Can they add/multiply/divide/subtract them?
  • Play card games with them
  • Get them to help with any cooking/baking and discuss quantities and measures
  • Help them learn how to tell the time. This can be done through television programmes or timings for dinner and general day to day routines. Can they time you with things? How long does it take to…?

Identifying problems and solving them (even if they don’t involve numbers!) can help your child to develop Maths skills. If you see your child puzzling over something, talk about the problem and try to work out the solution together. Can your child find more than one solution to the problem?
