Phonics at Timu

At Timu we believe that for all our children to become fluent readers and writers, phonics must be taught through a systematic and structured phonics programme and we use Letters and Sounds to deliver this.  Children begin the Letters and Sounds programme at the start of Reception and continue across Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and every child between Reception and Year 2 has a 20-25 minute daily phonics session.

We use the Letters and Sounds framework to plan and provide daily engaging and active phonics lessons. In phonics, we teach children phonics help us to read and write, that the letters of the alphabet represent a different sound, that these can be used in a variety of ways and are put together to make words.

In our phonics lessons

  • We follow a specific Letters and Sounds four part lesson structure and teaching sequence (review, teach, practise, apply) which promotes independence, resilience and success in all our learners.
  • We ensure that all phonics teaching is delivered with pace and passion.
  • We include an active element to all lessons that ensures participation for all learners.
  • Children learn to recognise all of the different sounds and combinations that they might see when they are reading or writing
  • We follow a specific sequence that allows our children to build on their previous phonic knowledge and master specific phonic strategies
  • We model these strategies in shared reading and writing both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum.

Children start at Phase 2 and then work at the phase they are assessed at and provision is put in place for children who need extra support from Reception to Year 6. Phase 6 is then consolidated in Year 3. Whilst becoming confident with their sounds, children choose decodable books at the phase they are working at. This continues until they are ready to move to AR books once they are fluent readers – this develops their reading fluency and comprehension.
